Strut your stuff and put your best foot forward in the Big River Steampunk Costume Contests!

There will be TWO Costume Contests held on Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31.  Entry is FREE to all contestants!

Contestants will be asked to fill out a short registration card just prior to the start of each contest. Each contestant will attend the Preliminary Round judging by "walking the red carpet" for the paparazzi, then appear before our distinguished panel of judges on the Grand Stage. Twelve finalists will be chosen and each will receive one of the highly coveted official "2019 Spring Faire Costume Contest Finalist" badges.

Finalists will then appear once again on the Grand Stage for the Costume Contest Finals where an overall winner will be chosen. Each day's winner  will receive a "Best In Show" Medal and $100 in Big River Fun Money, sponsored by Mississippi Marketplace at 217 N. Main Street.

PLEASE NOTE: Contestants may participate in both contests IF they have a different costume to showcase each day.

Do you love to tinker and create?

Are you a master at repurposing items into

Neo-vintage Steampunk Gadgetry?

Join us for the first ever "Tinkerer's Tournament"!

Two separate competitive rounds: "Single Tinkerers" or "Team Tinkerers"

Contestants will be given a basket containing mystery Steampunk-style pieces to create a unique, one-of-a-kind gadget or gizmo. All pieces found in the basket must be incorporated in the design; there will also be a “Junk Trunk” from which all participants may rummage to find additional items to add to their creations. Adhesives and tools will be made available to complete the project. The finished piece should have a designated function and name (even if the piece is purely ornamental and does not function in the manner in which it is intended!)

Each competition will be limited to 30 minutes. Once time has expired, a panel of judges will evaluate each finished piece and judge it on execution, creativity, ingenuity of name and stated function, and the piece’s overall aesthetic.

The winning competitor(s) will receive a special “Spring Faire Tinkerer’s Tournament Winner” badge and $25.00 in Big River Fun Money as their prize. They will also be able to keep their creation as a souvenir of the Faire.

"You Really Take the Cake!"

The origins of the Cake Walk are thought to have been developed on plantations in the South during Sunday afternoon get-togethers. Mimicking those in the "Big House", dancers would prance and promenade in comic fashion in a "chalkline walk" or "walk around" to entertain one another, with the prize of a delicious cake being given to one lucky couple.

The "walk" eventually made its way into popular culture, and in 1876, a special dance was exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The winning couple was awarded an enormous cake for their showmanship and exuberance. The Cake Walk, as it later became known, became wildly popular, particularly at the same time that Ragtime music gained in popularity toward the turn of the 20th century.

A revival of this Ragtime Era artform will be presented at the Big River Steampunk Spring Faire -- practice your moves and strut your stuff, you might just "Take the Cake"! (Cupcake, that is!)
